Team Uttara, 100 Smiles

“Remember even though the outside world might be raining, if you keep on smiling the sun will show its face back at you.”

For every positive change in every age, the leading role behind every movement was always taken by the Youth. Their energy has always proved to be the best. In this 21st century of a confusing situation, where no one knows what, when, where and how to do, there, a group of awesome Change Makers came up with the plan of 100 smiles, a simple project; a small initiative to put extraordinary smile on someone’s face-before the Eid. Total 3 teams of around 150 volunteers worked for this cause with approximately 500 underprivileged children.

Team Uttara, unlike the other teams, began its initial work long before. The volunteers sat together, discussed, planned, designed and have well executed the best way to redefine this great cause. They tried to do something new, something never tried before. They were well aware of how small their contributions are going to be, but they were focused and firmly believed that all those small contributions of individual volunteers, will definitely make a big accomplishment. And to some extent, we believe it did!

Our main theme was to do something, more precisely to give those kids-mainly from a very low income family-something. Things which might look very simple but can actually become a big factor behind their Innocent Smiles on the Eid Day. Team Uttara are really very much thankful to all of its Volunteers, who have contributed a lot and have donated. We have assured them it really doesn’t matter how big or small the contributions are, the most important part is to participate and the response was great. The shopping and packing were done before the Project Day.

Team Uttara have designed the whole project on three vital phases: Awareness Campaign, Putting Henna and Gift Distribution. The awareness campaign was mostly done about the Personal Hygiene; we tried our level best to make them understand that how small mistakes from us can actually become our pain. We have well instructed them, to brush their teeth, wash their hands and apply shampoo on their hairs regularly. The Henna session was the most exciting part and our Female volunteers have done a really awesome work. It was this session where we have seen the authentic smiles, the pure one, which we do miss in our real life. Last but not the least, our project ended by the distributions of the Gift packets, chocolates, wrist bands and brand new sandals. Our Gift packet consisted of tooth paste, tooth brush, soap, shampoo, and 15 chocolates. What a great way it was to end the whole session.

The whole Team consisted of 36 volunteers from different reputed Schools, Colleges and Universities. They know and they believe that it really doesn’t take much to put a smile on someone’s face, that’s why we together, as one team have put the smile on more than 80 underprivileged people, in less than three hours.

The project ended by a team meeting, where everyone discussed the lacking and the possibilities of such projects. At the end of the tiresome day, the smiles on each volunteer’s face, where most of them were fasting, proved that the Project 100 Smiles, Uttara Version was a success. The whole project was supervised by Mushfiq Rahman, Honurable EC of 1DI. The team can’t forget the Fully Energized Mentor of Team Uttara, Russel Rahman, and senior Member of 1DI.

It is almost impossible to smile on the outside without feeling better on the inside. A smile happens in a flash, but its memory can last a lifetime. Me, Asif Mahmood Abbas, Team Leader, Team Uttara of 100 Smiles, on behalf of all the Volunteers and everyone who have worked to make this happen, congratulates you all. Thanks a lot for being with us.
Thank you.

1DI rocks!!!

100 Smiles

Dear Volunteers,

As community activists, we often wonder what "change" is. We look for answers, plan these miraculous ground-breaking plans and pour funds into places we believe can result in sustainable changes.

Frequently, amidst the chaos of changing the world, we forget that the first step is changing ourselves and the people who surround us in our daily lives. We overlook the power we have to make small, beautiful changes that go a long way in people's hearts.

When 1° Initiative launched "100 Smiles", it aimed to recreate that feeling of small changes. The idea was generated by a member, shared with the group and finalized with inputs from everyone. What began as a random thought mobilized into a massive initiative, more than what we had expected - but always dreamed of.

Yes, the project has been immensely successful. From 9am in the morning, teams in different parts of Dhaka gathered and dispersed to share the joy of Eid with children less fortunate than ourselves. Over 130 volunteers participated - and distributed bangles, caps, toys, trinkets, tennis balls, chocolates, toothbrushes and so on to children on the streets. Together, we put henna on the kids' hands, painted their faces, played with their toys and giggled at everyone's lame jokes. Together, we learnt to brush our teeth, wash our hands before eating and after coming out from the toilet, and the values of teamwork and sharing. In a matter of only 5 hours, we were able to bring a glittering, precious smile on the faces of nearly 500 children.

That is the power of small changes.

500 smiles and counting. It might seem like a small number, but trust us, it's a big start.

Thank you for able to create this feeling. When we had every option to go on Eid shopping, hang out with friends, sleep at home or browse Facebook - we chose to be under the baking sun and colour the city orange. We chose to let children become a part of our lives, and they in turn, trusted us to become a part of theirs.

This is where change begins. Thank you for being the change. :)

Note, 1° Initiative believes in small changes and your ideas. We encourage youth empowered initiatives, and our projects go from building libraries across the country and facilitating leadership building workshops to planting a tree in the patch of soil amidst urban concrete. If you're interested to become a regular member, please feel free to drop in your CV (with a brief paragraph explaining why you want to work with us) at our inbox. You're always welcome.
